A Platform:  I was told I needed to build a platform a long time ago. I'm a journalist and that seemed anathema to me. I'm not alone in that - most writers don't like the promotion side of things. (More on that topic some other time.) The compromise is this space, where I'll put essays and shorter posts about people like Mollie Gregory and Jimmy McDonald, and places like movie sets, sailboats and Bismarck, N.D., and things like kazoos and sequoias and the state of journalism. A platform! Otherwise, I'll stick to my day job, which is covering the other side of Hollywood. This is my book, published Feb. 13, 2019:

Below the Line: Anatomy of a Successful Movie is narrative nonfiction about how major motion pictures are made today using one movie as a vehicle. The movie stars are well known -- Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Kline and Mary Steenburgen – but in this book they play supporting roles. Instead, the leads are the people behind the camera, the director and a huge cast of artists and artisans, designers and creators, overseers, office and logistical support, editors and musicians. The book follows them, stopping along the way to explain process and different aspects of the business.
